Why the European Parliament failed to reform the EU’s carbon Market

In a dramatic turn of events, MEPs voted against a watered-down compromise that defanged proposed legislation to reform the EU’s carbon market and sent it back to the European Parliament’s environment committee.
On 22 June 2022, parliamentarians got a second chance to vote on revamping the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS), together with the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and the Social Climate Fund.
Hosted by Carbon Market Watch, this press briefing explained the science and politics behind the last EU ETS reform. Expert speakers from civil society organisations across Europe provided insights into what was needed and what went wrong.
