CO₂ price for transport and heating: implementation of ETS II and the Social Climate Fund in Germany
The new EU-level carbon price on transport and heating, which will be launched in 2027, is important for the EU to achieve its climate targets. The new emissions trading scheme (ETS II) will then replace the CO₂ price already introduced in Germany – with potentially rapidly rising CO₂ prices.
Germany should prepare for this now, recommends Germanwatch, as part of the LIFE ETX project, with reference to the new study on the implementation of ETS II and the Social Climate Fund. The rapid introduction of a per capita lump sum payment (“Klimageld”) in Germany is a key building block for this, because people need certainty that climate protection works in a socially just way.
