Going the extra (green) mile: the role of international transport in the climate transition

The revision of the EU’s Emissions Trading System (ETS) is now well underway as the EU institutions dive deep into trilogue negotiations.

The international transport sectors oftentimes go under the radar as more contentious topics take centre stage, but they are, nevertheless, very much a central part of the EU ETS’ role in tackling the climate crisis. However, there is still a long way to go to align both sectors’ path towards climate neutrality.

This fourth ETS Talks aims to highlight the importance of the EU ETS in addressing the negative environmental impacts associated with air travel and maritime transport.

Key questions: 

What is the extent and quality of efforts taken by the aviation sector in terms of carbon credits usage?

Will carbon offsetting encourage the change required to travel by air sustainably or is more regulatory action needed?

Why is it important to address maritime emissions?

What would be the best way forward for the maritime ETS?
